Shell Beach is in the Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park, nestled between Dolphin Bay and Browns Beach. If you turn from the roundabout and head a little past Shepherd's Hutt and The Shell Beach campground, you will see the newly upgraded car park. Shell Beach is a few hundred metres long with the steps to the western end. At the eastern end (far side of the beach) you will see a rocky point. There is a beautiful little rock pool there. As of 12/5/22 a new toilet is being constructed right at the walkway of the beach. Shell Beach sits inside Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park, nestled between Dolphin Beach and Browns Beach. From the roundabout, head past Shepherd's Hut and the Shell Beach campground and you will find the newly upgraded carpark. From there a short walk brings you down to a beach that punches well above its size.

The beach is a few hundred metres long, with steps at the western end. The sand is coarser and darker than you will find at nearby Dolphin Beach, giving it more of a surf beach feel despite the calm conditions. It is a comfortable beach for a swim, with clear water and a relaxed atmosphere that rarely gets crowded.

What is the Blue Pool at Shell Beach? The Blue Pool is the reason many people make the trip to Shell Beach. Hidden away at the furthest end of Shell Beach, the Blue Pool is a natural rock pool offering beautiful, clear water for swimming. At low tide you can drop into the sheltered waters and explore an underwater world of fish, coral, crabs and starfish. It is one of the best Instagram locations on the Yorke Peninsula and a genuine hidden gem. Walk the beach to the far end, follow the rocks around to the next headland and keep going until you find it. Note that it does not appear on the official Innes National Park map, so knowing where to look is half the battle.

Can you swim at Shell Beach? Yes, both the beach itself and the Blue Pool are great for swimming. The rock pool is the standout option, particularly at low tide when the water is at its clearest and calmest. As with all beaches in the park, there are no lifeguards on patrol.

Is there camping at Shell Beach? Yes. Shell Beach Campground sits just off the beach with eight sites. A national park entry permit is required.

Do I need an entry permit? Yes. Shell Beach is inside Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park. Permits can be purchased online or at the visitor information centre at the park entrance.

History about Shell Beach.

Shell Beach sits on the traditional country of the Narungga people, the Dilpa clan of the south, who have lived on and cared for this coastline for tens of thousands of years. The Narungga relied heavily on the coastal resources of the region, fishing, gathering shellfish and hunting in the surrounding bushland and dunes, with seasonal camps established along shores like these. Archaeological evidence within the park includes shell middens, artefact scatters and campsites dating back thousands of years. The name Shell Beach may well reflect what generations of visitors have found underfoot here long before it was formally named.

The land became part of Innes National Park in 1970, protecting the coastal habitat shaped by both the Narungga people and the gypsum mining era at nearby Inneston. It remains one of the quieter and more rewarding stops in the park for those willing to walk to the end of the beach.
